THE RIGHT THINK™ FOR COACHES book reviewpar Michel Daigle
Michel Daigle wrote this article as a follow up to a presentation he gave at ICF Québec Coaching Breakfast meeting on October 12th 2018. His well-received presentation sparked a healthy discussion about the continuing personal development of coaches
Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, but it is always right.
The preceding statement led to the development of the Right Think™ written by Tom Trifaux, a collection of quotes, insights and wisdom related to ARC, authenticity, resiliency and connectedness. It was originally published in November 2015 and inspire by the book, Make It Happen: Slow Down, Stop and Move Forward, written by Michel Daigle in 2012.
The Right Think for COACHES is the next step in the evolution of this concept and a collaboration between Michel and Tom. It is a book written for both experienced coaches looking for confirmation they are on the right path, as well as for newcomers to the field, who seek support on their coaching journey. Michel and Tom hope this workbook will serve all those who practice the discipline of coaching and be a guiding light on the challenging days when coaches support the growth of others.
So why is ARC important to the building of an enduring coaching relationship?
ARC Coaching provides the coach with a way to affirm his true coaching voice through being Authentic, remain unsurprised by challenges and assuring the right effort is provided by the client through being Resilient and Connected to oneself and leveraging the power of community.
Putting ARC into practice and for this article the focus will be on authenticity:
Being authentic is giving yourself time to do some self-discovery, to increase self-awareness and to focus ones self-development. Our deep down interest in supporting others blended with our experience and our knowledge help us become trustworthy and this cannot be achieved without being authentic.
As Brene Brown says: ‘’Authenticity is a daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.’’
Conversations are at the core of the coaching approach and having authentic conversations have benefits for the coach and the client; better connection, a higher level of attention, better dialogue, deeper thinking, enhanced listening, a healthier environment, renewed optimism, breakthroughs, a higher level of commitment, more powerful questions , superior solutions, better chance of success, lasting results. As coaches we understand that authentic conversations establish rapport and trust. To do so, we will do a lot of listening and validate what is relevant in the conversation. The right question (s) usually provide a space for the right think. Ex: What’s making it this way? What do you want to create here and now? How can you inspire yourself?
Why is coaching authenticity so important?
It creates a link with the person, provides a safe place for the person to open up, supports the intention of the person, clarifies important issues, helps build a lasting relationship – invites real information.
In conclusion,
‘’Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, but it is always right.’’ This statement sums up the challenge we face daily: how to move forward with purpose and meaning and not shirk our responsibility to do our best. Coaches help people find what is right for them. This often leads to finding the inner strength to do the right thing.
