The Alchemy of Values

In our work being of service to others, the foundation of effective engagement and commitment to growth and development are values. Values inform our perspectives, our motivations, and our actions, and as such are fundamental to how we live our lives.

Yet how can we get a grasp on something like “values” – a concept that is simultaneously both ambiguous and varied – in ways that aid our ability to be of service, and that brings resonance and worth to a structured and conscious approach to growth and development? Many values have been identified, many overlap, and still many are open to individual interpretation.

In our efforts to bring structure and clarity to others (and to ourselves!), we can draft an approach to values in essential ways thanks to the work of various advances in social and moral psychology coupled with cross-cultural research. These approaches have also contributed to social learning theory…and learning is something on which our profession depends.

Taking into account instrumental and terminal values (according to the Rokeach Value Survey), Shalom’s Theory of Basic Values, and Haidt’s Moral Foundations Theory, we can begin to collaborate to forge an applicable and valuable means toward bringing the gold of values from the lead of uncertain feelings.

Join us for an evening of insights and sharing around a table of coaches.
